DOMINICAN rEPUBLIC

MMRD Dominican Dance Adventure
Presented by MetaMovements, J&L Dance Studio, & the MMRD Dancers!

Begins Saturday, February 18, 2023

Join us for an incredible adventure in the birthplace of bachata: the Dominican Republic! This flexible journey (three-day and five-day options, plus extensions available) is a chance for American travelers and Dominican artists to connect through our shared love of dance.

This is a trip for adventurers who are ready to go off-the-beaten path and enjoy every moment to the maximum! Travel with like-minded people who want to immerse themselves in a new culture and make new friends while taking a deep dive into the history of Dominican dance. We are dance enthusiasts and people who care deeply about supporting local artists who dedicate their lives to honoring the roots of popular dance styles, creating innovations that will light up our future.

Each day, you'll build your skills in dance workshops taught by renowned local artists and international guests, participate in cultural exchange activities and excursions, and dance the night away with your instructors and hosts at parties around the town. There’s also plenty of time to join an add-on course, take private lessons, relax on the beach, try a new activity or explore the area on your own.

We want this to be the ideal trip for YOU, so if you want to skip a group activity to have more personal time, feel free to let us know!

Las Terrenas is a beautiful beach destination on the north coast of the Samaná Peninsula that has become a hub for dance-lovers from near and far. Its landscape is every bit as scenic as the Dominican Republic’s more famous beach towns–Punta Cana, Puerto Plata, etc–but there are no resorts or chain hotels in Las Terrenas, giving it a more authentic and inclusive vibe. As you walk around and spend time in restaurants and clubs, you will mingle with people from many regions of the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Europe and other parts of the world who’ve all chosen Las Terrenas as their home.

Las Terrenas was significantly impacted by the pandemic and then Hurricane Fiona last September. The dancers are thankful for the support they received from MetaMovements, J & L Dance Studio and other sources that enabled them to get through the hardest times and come back even stronger than before. On this trip, we’ll learn how they utilized the support to stabilize and transform during the pandemic and rebuild so quickly after the hurricane. You will also learn more about their goals for the future, including their vision for the “dance sanctuary” they have created in this tiny town.

Pre-Program

Arrive a day or two early to Santo Domingo if that better fits your dates off work or helps you get the flights you like the best. We can arrange a place to stay near the airport or in the beautiful Colonial Zone, and we can arrange private lessons, dance outings, or excursions with our team there if you wish.

Post-Program

Stay a few days longer to continue training with MMRD Collective Members, and/or to explore other aspects of the island with one of our personalized excursion packages.

Other Extension Activities

Here are a few samples of what travelers in our February 2023 group have requested.  Please feel free to inquire for more!

Whale-Watching Excursion
Humpback whales from around the world gather each January near the Samana Peninsula for their courtship season and then stay to care for their recently birthed calves… a February scene that enchants travelers and locals alike! Enjoy the unique whale watching opportunities that are only available at this time of the year!

Los Haitises
For those who have wanted to travel into these mysterious tall rock formations the most fun way to do so is by boat, experiencing a sublime landscape of keys, mangroves, an island of birds, and entering impressive ancient caves with petroglyphs and indigenous pictographs.

For the two above activities we would help you extend your stay in Las Terrenas, and then arrange transportation to the airport of your preference in time for your departure.  Cathay is closest, but there are many more flights from Santo Domingo.

Cibao Extension
A few travelers in our group have expressed interest in visiting the Cibao region in the central part of the island, with a special wish to visit the Mirabal sisters’ home/museum in Salcedo. These sisters worked tirelessly to end the dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo and were assassinated by his forces on 25 November 1960.  They are honored today as national heroes and are recognized internationally as beloved symbols of popular and feminist resistance–you may have heard of them from the book or movie “In the Time of the Butterflies.” There are also exciting outdoor adventures in the area like Laguna de Salcedo and surrounding mountains, and we can include other locations depending on the requests and interests of the travelers.  With this extension you could choose to depart from Santiago, Puerto Plata or Santo Domingo.

  • Many activities or purchases do not offer refunds… although some may offer transfers.
